About the Tournament
Established in 1994, by Steele Zinser, marrow transplant recipient, the tournament has raised over $250,000, added more than 2,000 donors to the national Be The Match Registry®, and helped increase awareness about the need for marrow donors throughout central and south Texas.
“It started in 1994 with nothing but a desire on my part to help others have a better chance of finding a donor. I had ample time to realize that I was very fortunate to have my brother as an ideal match. My promise to God was that if I survived I would do what I could.”
- Steele Zinser, Tournament Founder
In Memory of Rowan Windham
There are some people who are just meant to change the world. That's what Rowan was to our GenCure family. Diagnosed with Schwachman-Diamond Syndrome, a rare disease that affects the pancreas, GI tract, immune system, blood and bone marrow, Rowan received dozens of blood transfusions and spent more than 1,000 days in the hospital. That’s a lot for anyone to endure at any age, let alone a 10-year-old boy. But Rowan never faltered in his faith in people. He loved his life and inspired others to never take a moment for granted.
Our team worked tirelessly to help find Rowan a marrow match, which he desperately needed to save his life. Unfortunately, a match was not found on the national marrow registry and Rowan passed away from complications on December 15, 2016.
Rowan said, "If you can't see the good... make the good." That's our mission now. To find the good and make his dreams of putting 1 million potential donors on the Be The Match registry a reality. Your participation at this year's golf tournament will help to make this dream come true.
Proceeds from this year's golf tournament will benefit the GenCure Marrow Donor Program, a partner of Be The Match. Net proceeds will support the donor commitment and education program, an initiative designed to increase donor availability rates in central and south Texas. Nationally, 50% of registry members will follow through when contacted as a possible match for a patient. Sadly, less than 40% of donors in our local community will commit to a donation.
