GenCure Contributing to Growth of Research into Life-Changing Therapies
July 22, 2015
Umbilical cord blood has so many medical uses, scientists are starting to find them by accident.

In a recent case, researchers looking into a disease related to skin grafts identified a part of umbilical cord blood that can lower inflammation and immune disorders caused by those grafts.

At the same time, they found those same proteins, called soluble NKG2D ligands, could be used to treat similar conditions that affect the skin, including eczema, rheumatoid arthritis and perhaps even alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss.

The discovery, reported in the latest edition of the European Journal of Immunology, comes as the United States marks National Cord Blood Awareness Month in July.

Up to 80 diseases, from leukemia to some genetic disorders, can be treated with transplants of either umbilical cord blood or bone marrow.

Cord blood is especially vital, since the blood in the placenta and umbilical cord immediately after the birth of a child is rich in stem cells, which make the multiple therapies possible.

Raising awareness of the need for cord blood donations is the focus of Cord Blood Awareness Month, which is in July. Efforts to educate parents about the need to donate are ongoing with organizations like the Parent’s Guide to Cord Blood Foundation.

Stem cell donor Samuel Hillhouse meets with his recipient, Sarah Bennett.
Samuel Hillhouse, whose job is working with the Be The Match program, got to play a bigger part in the lifesaving process recently.

The story of how Hillhouse, a community engagement representative in the GenCure Cellular Therapy Center, saved a life with a stem cell donation has been turned into an inspirational video.

Earlier this year, Hillhouse met Sarah Bennett, who received the stem cell transplant, in Chicago.

The story of Bennett’s illness and recovery, along with Hillhouse’s role, are documented in a video released by Be The Match.
