The Texas Cord Blood Bank (TCBB), a public program of GenCure, honored members of the Methodist Hospital Administration and Labor and Delivery staff for their continuing support and outstanding performance in collecting cord blood donations.

The Methodist Hospital in San Antonio has been a collection partner since the inception of the TCBB in 2005, and the collaboration has resulted in more than 104 cord blood units shipped for transplant.

A new documentary film is shedding light on the need for more people of diverse and mixed-race origins to sign up for the bone marrow donor registry.

Jeff Chiba Stearns’ film, Mixed Match, has been shown at multiple film festivals after making its debut at the 35th Vancouver International Film Festival.

Mixed Match follows the stories of five people trying to find life-saving bone marrow donations. Their searches have been unsuccessful because of their ethnically diverse backgrounds.

To have a successful stem cell transplant, the donor and patient must have closely matched HLA (human leukocyte antigen) genetic markers. For some patients with multiple ethnic backgrounds, this can be a one-in-a-million shot.

Lone Star Circle of Life tour kicks off in San Antonio, bringing awareness to the gift of life

The Lone Star Circle of Life Bike Tour continues to raise awareness of the need for life-saving donations of blood, bone marrow, cord blood, organs and tissue. Cyclists will begin the 600-mile ride Saturday at 10 a.m. at the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center donor Pavilion. Cyclists will be riding for local honorees who have needed or donated these precious gifts of life. Some of the honorees include:
